International Shirkers Day Out - 8 July 2014

dave_lobley
Full route details of Stage 4 of TdF have not yet been published, but for those that fancy a day out in the french countryside with plenty of good food and wine and a bike race thrown in, PROVISIONAL plan is as below -

Depart Sevenoaks Station 0606, arrive Dover 0732 to catch 0825 P&O ferry
Cycle through Nord pas de Calais to watch TdF go by at suitable point
Lunch at same place as last year Manoir de Brugnobois, replenish water bottle with the rather nice house red
Cycle back to Calais, get hopelessly separated but somehow miraculously come back together in time to catch 1955 ferry
Back to Dover 2025 to catch 2058, 2125, or 2158 train home - depending how long the stroppy ferry crew decide to hold us on the boat

Best deal is apparently £27 for combined Train and Ferry ticket from Sevenoaks Station.

when do you need committed names by ?
dave_lobley
No urgency at all for names Huw (it's a book your own tickets and turn up on the day type operation) but I will need numbers and meal choices for the restaurant about a week before

can i book a train and ferry now and be done ? do i go online or in person to sevenoaks train station?
Glenda1
Yes please. I'd like to join.
dave_lobley
Im pretty sure the £27 ferry saver is not available online, you have to get it direct from a station. Martin Brown is the expert on it.

I went down to 7Oaks station and bought the ticket a couple of days before we went. I'll ask next time I am there what the current deal is.

mes amis, the detailed route for stage 4 is out, and all works fine for a day of top class international shirking. The times seem to work better for a late lunch at Manoir de Brugnobois after watching the boys go by somewhere near the delightful sounding Lumbres (per Wikipedia "Lumbres is an industrial town built on former marshes at the crossroads of the valleys of the rivers Aa and Bléquin")
in essence, the plan works out along the lines of :
0606 train from Sevenoaks, 0825 Ferry, arrive 1055, escape maze of Calais 1130
40k to Lumbres – arrive say 1315, time to get a hot dog or similar before
Tour passes 1507
17k to Manoir de Brugnobis – arrive 1615
Food and Drink till 1745
28k to Calais – arrive 1915
1955 ferry, arrive 2025
2058, 2125 or 2158 train home

what could go wrong ??

dave_lobley
regards tickets, Sevenoaks Station told me the combined saver is no longer available (although it wasnt the most switched on of counter staff so may be wrong). In which case its £13 return on the ferry (best to book in advance) and about £27 on train.

Hi Dave, Is this open to friends as well or only Club Members? Also are the SE Rail guys OK if a mob arrive with bikes etc. and want to get on the train? Don't want to get turned away at the last minute
dave_lobley
Hi ULUcUrL5 - of course, friends are very welcome (as long as they are nice people and can ride a bike in a vaguely straight line after half a bottle of red wine). We had no problems last year on the train with about 12 bikes - the 0606 train heading away from London was not exactly busy !!

Count me Dave. Great fun on our last adventure.

Hi Dave.....I would also like to join you.

Thanks Dave, I think Nick is a nice chap and he can certainly stay upright on his bike after a few glasses of wine. Please count us in Nick Moran and me Greg Morris (ULUcUrL5). We may get on the train from Orpington.

I asked at the ticket office Sevenoaks and if you are persistent (in a nice Sevenoaks way) you will get a price for the ticket. Just ask them to type in 7Oaks to Calais and you get a price of £28.80 return using P&O ferries. This is going to be a popular ferry so suggest book early. Bon voyage
Glenda1
Hi Dave, any more detail on this yet?

if anyone needs to park in Sevenoaks and avoid parking charges then I have a spare driveway.. 20 St Botolphs Rd - It is the overgrown driveway with the 3 garages on it . Just open the gate and leave your car there.
