Box Hill Fell Race 2014

The Box Hill Fell race is the only official fell race in the south of England and having personally done several in the Lake District equally as tough, although if you decide to retire being in Surry it’s only a short walk to the nearest Cappuccino bar instead of being choppered away by mountain rescue.

This was the second year for Dave Lobley, Val Place and myself to do the event, last year the cold and snow made for interesting conditions.  This year Debbie Munton joined the fun and it was much warmer but still extremely slippery in places after all the ‘nice’ weather we have had.

The course basically goes up and down Box Hill five times adding up to 7.5 miles and 1500ft of ascent.  There was quite a lot of walking on the ways up and quite a lot of skidding on the ways down.  The best bit being the last descent where you could let yourself go knowing that you could always use the race marshals on the finishing line as your breaking system.

So, Dave knocked 2 minutes off last year’s time, well done! Val was 10 minutes fastest than last year, very well done and Debbie was first in her AG (out of 1) extremely well done! But I was 2 minutes slower, too many mince pies at Christmas me thinks. (Sam Bennett)

Next hill race at Leith Hill  - its on 2 June (so should be better weather), 3 courses - 10, 16, and 30kms, (but 10 is a bit too short and 30 is just silly!), a little bit of navigation required but not much, and all for £8
