Club Middle Distance Champs - Sussex Tri - 22 June
There were only 3 of us from the club on the start line – after the race had to be changed; injuries and conflicts – but this shouldn’t belie the effort made on behalf of each of the 3 of us. Ashburnham is a very pretty location but a tough course – hilly bike and hilly, windy off road run. Dave Truman started with a back injury and having been told by Doctor and coach not to do the run. Sarah Jones was doing her 3rd ever attempt at the distance after a good result in Mallorca 70.3 – and I was doing my third middle distance/half IM in 3 weeks.
The atmosphere was good as there was a sprint ( Paul Cherry was 8th overall and second in age) and Olympic event concurrent with ours. Swim was a bit convoluted – going in and out of buoys. I enjoyed the bike course – and even managed to increase my speed on each of the 4 lap descents (familiarity!). I came in to T2 as second lady – just – and was quickly passed by a lovely lady who had passed me on the descents but I made up time on the climbs. Turns out her mother is my age. You know your’e really old when people say ‘ so how old are you’? I was in fact the oldest in the whole event! At the beginning of the run I felt ok but I didn’t have the energy I had had the last 2 Sundays. I was keeping the 1st 2 ladies in my site and could see the lady in 4th closing in on me – she passed me on the last lap to take 3rd , leaving me in 4thoverall by 40 secs – had the kick last week but not this week. Dave had a good race – although I couldn’t believe he stopped to chat with me as he grabbed some water – but then the guy in second stopped to chat with his wife – allowing Dave to pass him for 2nd. Sarah had a taste of how hard some courses are – and can now officially be called an experienced middle distance triathlete – having earned a top 10 result!
