Mallorca 312

I'm still buzzing from the excitement of riding this last Saturday - a sportive around the perimeter of Mallorca, over 14,110 feet of climbing which I'd usually prefer to pass on, but not there, the scenery is breathtaking! When you are not climbing, the descents and rolling terrain are fantastic... mostly on lovely smooth, quiet roads and the locals come out to cheer you on.

When we reached the busy town of Palma there was a lane exclusively for the 1400 cyclists who rode the full 312 km route. There was an alternative 167km route which cut through the centre of the island, but if you do that one you miss the party in Arta! Well that's just not my style to miss a good party!

This photo was taken there, 21km from the finish line and the celebration had already started!

The Green Polkadot jerseys were the pacers and they had it all under control, once you were on their wheels you were guaranteed to finish in the 14 hour cut off and in style! We had a motorcycle
escort into the finish at Alcudia as the sun was setting and Didi the Devil to welcome us over the line! To add to the satisfaction of completing my first all day sportive, I received an award too! I may have been the last woman (and the oldest) to cross the line but not all make it. Oldest male in the final peloton received this award too, which was clearly part of a PR initiative to show that this challenge is possible for anyone who loves riding a bike around Mallorca!
