Podium places for Begg and Hitchings at the Europeans
Sam Begg and I took second male and third female places respectively at the European Off-Road Triathlon Championships. The event was held at Vachery Estate in Cranleigh, Surrey on 30 August. The race was a 1,500m lake swim, a 30km mountain bike and an 10km trail run. Two hundred and 61 athletes took to the start line including 19 male and 16 female professional athletes. Sam finished 2nd of the non-professionals in a time of 2hr 53 minutes and in doing so scalped a few pros and held off the female pro winner Lesley Paterson.
I was using the race as a stepping stone to the World Championships in Sardinia at the end of September. I finished in 3 hrs 36 minutes; good enough for 3rd place overall and was within a few minutes of the tail-end of the pros. For me the muddy conditions on the bike were a nightmare. I lost count of the number of times I crashed. I had a solid swim and run. The course at the World Championships should suit my better – nice and dry and hilly.
