Last Sunday was the European Cross Triathlon Championship in Sardinia. My first ever Xterra triathlon! 1,500m swim, 30k mountain bike and 10k run.
Wow! What an experience.
25 degrees heat, the water was 16 degrees. A beach start (~300 men and women together) and two laps with a 50m run on the beach before returning to the water for the second lap. I have never swam in such clear water. Super choppy so it was about 200m before I saw the first (piddly) bouy. The bouy turns were super busy and a bit weird to look down and see a frog-person underneath taking photos!
This was a brand new race and impecably well organised with over 6,000 entrants.Having entered a few months ago , I immediately discovered that Sunday 9th was the day of the 3uptt and was very miffed. However , the half was great training for our 70.3 Aaghus (Denmark) race in June (so Kim and I kept saying)
We were reminded of our mission with weekly chirpy emails, then daily even chirpier messages by the race organisers , and received our time chipped numbers and tear off bag label by post.
The race start was at the Guildford Stadium.
Nathan Marsh came in 6th in the Junior Aquathlon and was the first triathlete in for the South East in The PruHealth World Triathlon Junior Section on Saturday 31st in Hyde Park, London. Times of 9.13 for the 750 swim and 17.20 for the 5k run.
If you're getting into longer distance cycling this is certainly a ride to pencil in your diaries for next year. Stunning route and brilliantly organised by Evans cycles ; it sets off from their headquarters in Crawley and you have a single loop 55m or double 110m choice , with an opt out clause half way if not feeling good or too slow to make the 2nd lap cut off time of 12 noon.
Meet at Seal Rec - 9.30, Godden Green - 9.35 and Chaser Inn - 10.00. Expected pace +15 mph average and total cycling time around 2:30 plus 30 mins Cafe stop. Neil leads.
Clive Bradburn registered the Club's first Open Water success of the season in the Windsor 3K on 1st June, coming first in age group and finishing the top third overall. Clive's take on the swim - "Water temperature 15 degrees but a strong current flowing. A lot of congestion in a narrow channel with a large entry, so “washing machine” battles throughout. Great fun but no injuries".
The Club diary lists lots of open water events. Now that the lake season is well under way, why not give one a try?
Twenty one riders turned up on a decent evening to do a couple of laps on the A228.

Meet Seal Rec 9.30, Godden Green 9.35, Chaser Inn 10.00 then head to Leigh, Chiddingstone Causeway, Crockham Hill, Limpsfield then back along Pilgrims Way to Seal after a cafe stop in Westerham. Total distance from Seal is approx 40 miles. Expected average pace +15 mph. Penny leads.
Martin Brown was in action on A31 in Surrey last Sunday hoping to dip under 4:11. The wind blew up considerably during the second 50 miles and this meant he just finished outside his target time with 4:11:33. Martin was racing this as part of his training for the National 24 hour TT Champs next month and was 30th out of 116 finishers.
Well done to Janice, Steve and the other five riders for turning out on Saturday afternoon in terrible conditions for racing on the bike. As "ever present in 2014" Janice says "We started to a darkening sky and for me the finish was in a hail storm and several inches of water with streaks of lightning, I was unable to hear the thunder and don't think I'll get a PB on that one". She didn't get a PB unfortunately but it's bound to happen later in the year!
Next inter club 10 is this Thursday on A228 at East Peckham. 7.15 start.

Swim of 1h 15m was the same time that I swim 3.8k in the pool so hoped for benefits of wetsuit buoyancy and drafting were counteracted by beach start, collisions and going off course on the first loop.
The bike was suitably hard, as expected (6h exactly averaging 200 watts). Wind wasn't too strong so could have been even worse.
2nd in my age group for T2 so at least a PB for a transition!

The speed merchants were out in force for the Club Sprint Championship on Sunday at East Grinstead.
The cold and very windy conditions added to the tension before the race, with much talk about what to wear on the bike. However once we had had our group start in the warm pool most of us agreed it did not feel too cold out on the road but the gusting wind did make for some precarious riding.
Neil Harris was the first man home in the club coming a third overall and Cath Linney was the first club lady home and coming second overall in FV40.
A plan of devilish audacity, and cunning - a veritable schlieffen movement in its simplicity.
Saturday 0720 hrs Saturday hostilities commence. Red corps ('err indoors) drops Private Mort (Mischa) at Riverhead roundabout to be picked up for pre-emptive strike on Southampton (athletics match); and cadet Mort (Xinny) in Weald for training manoeuvres (cub camp)
There are now lots of swimming events in the Club Diary, so have a browse and see if anything takes your fancy. There are events all the year round, and whether you want to test your swimming in a mass participation sea, lake (including a women only race at Dorney Lake) or river swim, with or without wetsuits and over distances from 750m to 5km, or in a Masters pool race with races from 50m to 1500m and age groups from 25-29 to 90+, there's bound to be something for you.
