Ironman Wales - I picked a doozy for a first Ironman!

"Never again" - Matt Bee, 13th September 2015

They were the first words out my mouth after completing possibly the hardest thing I have ever undertaken. While I might be coming round to doing another iron distance triathlon, it'll be a slightly easier one next time!

Preparation with Paul Butler as coach was good, up until the birth of our first child, Freddy - who interrupted the training just a tad!  So 2 months of very little training and we were off to Wales.

Challenge Weymouth 2015. ETU European Long Distance Championship

The Met Office has given up trying to forecast the weather in Weymouth. It’s got it’s own micro climate”, the volunteer showing me round transition shook his head sagely. Friday had seen gale force winds and big waves. On Saturday people were sunbathing on the beach. Race day? Who knew. This would be my fourth outing in the GB Trisuit that chafes in places other suits can’t even think of and it would turn out to be…….interesting.

You know you have those days when everything goes perfectly. Well this wasn’t one of those days.

7Oaks Tri retains Inter Club Trophy and wins the 4-up TTT - 12/9/15 (PHOTOS ADDED)

Desite earlier on in the season Sydenham having a healthy lead and latterly GS Avanti looking uncatchable, 7Oaks put in a great last minute surge supported by the club's top riders and romped home in the 4-up TTT on a rainy A20. Andy Ten-Broeke, Martin Brown, Chris Hansen and Neil McInerney were the fastest on the day beating Sydenham by just 19 seconds. Third team home was also 7Oaks with Steve Walker, Neil Harris, Sam Begg and Dan Goscomb just 25 seconds behind Sydenham.

Podium places for Begg and Hitchings at the Europeans

Sam Begg and I took second male and third female places respectively at the European Off-Road Triathlon Championships. The event was held at Vachery Estate in Cranleigh, Surrey on 30 August. The race was a 1,500m lake swim, a 30km mountain bike and an 10km trail run. Two hundred and 61 athletes took to the start line including 19 male and 16 female professional athletes. Sam finished 2nd of the non-professionals in a time of 2hr 53 minutes and in doing so scalped a few pros and held off the female pro winner Lesley Paterson.

Ironman 70.3 World Championships – Zell am See, Austria

The first time for this event outside of North America was always going to be a different experience – and it was. Zell is a spectacular location – a ski resort circumnavigating lake Zell. Sally suggested we take the cable car, behind our charming hotel (researched by Glenda) up the mountain for a picnic lunch. Sitting there overlooking the snow topped glacier on a carpet of tall green grass we really felt like extras in ‘the Sound of Music’ or in our case the ‘Sound of Triathletes’.

Epic Cymru – South Wales, Charlie Mortleman

Another to add to a list of “different” events this year (following hot on the heels of the Dunwich Dynamo, Charlie the Bikemonger’s  Dorset Gravel Dash, and QECP day and night Enduro) the Epic Cymru looked like it could be a goody. Well, 4 big days and a prologue XC race were never going to be dull…..

Midnight man

After doing over 60 (mainly sprint) triathlons over the last 12 years, I thought that it might be safe to dip my toe into the murky waters (literally) of middle distance!

The criteria were that it should not take too much time away from home or cost too much. This lead me to the 'midnight man' up the road in the shadows of littlebrook power station, Dartford. Starting at 6pm, I wondered whether I could get back home to bed before midnight so that I didn't turn into a pumpkin?

Thorpe Park Oly Distance Race Report

by Shaun Mullen

The weather report you don’t want to see before kicking off a triathlon is ‘wet and windy’ but that’s what we got. Luckily I was spared the biblical downpour that hit just as I crossed the finish line. Sam Begg won the race so he probably didn’t see a drop of rain.

Thorpe park Olympic results

It was an early start for ten 7oaks tri club members when they left to compete in the new Thorpe park Olympic distance triathlon. The swim started at 07:00 in a large water sports lake in the centre of the park going under a bridge full of spectators twice.

The bike course set out a single circuit of an ‘undulating’ course through the countryside. Halfway through the bike was when the rain started to fall!

Report from David Skrobanek from his first 1/2 IM in Marlow.

by David Skrobanek

On Sunday I participated on my first ever Half distance triathlon. The place I chose was great – Marlow. I read a lot of good reviews and I am happy to confirm that it was very well organized and friendly race in a beautiful countryside alongside the Thames river. Also very family friendly, which those who know me know, that it is very important for me.

Q10/25 Results - 9 July

Not a good turn out from 7Oaks Tri for this one although the ones who did turn up all finished in the top half of the field with Neil Harris being the fastest on the night and the improving Neil McInerney just under a minute behind and in third place. Andy Evans did a PB for this course and knocked over 30 seconds off his previous best time. Poor Janice who was our only lady rider took a tumble near the end but reported in as being "fine" the morning after.
