Grafman – British Middle Distance Championships
By Jane Wiley
This event has got a lot bigger since Steve Walker and I did the first one a few years ago. This year Grafham Water hosted the British Middle Distance Champs – attracting a very large field and some very good athletes. I met George Strong ( 25- 20 yrs), fellow club member as we prepped in transition. It is a great venue – with good lake, relatively fast and not completely flat bike – with undulating and scenic off road run routes. My swim was fine – I thought, but still managed to be in the bottom half of my age group. Decided it’s because I don’t swim in with the scrum (nothing to do with poor technique of course). Being behind the fast pack I got stuck for a while at the beginning of the bike – and like so many races with large fields there were too many ‘packs’ of drafters. I really enjoyed the run – up and down by the large dam and through a wood and then a little hamlet. I saw George as I ran in for the last mile. I learned afterwards that he had punctured late on the bike course – otherwise he would have been ahead, finishing with a particularly fast run. I was beaten by a lady who is beyond awesome and just moved up into my age group – she was second in AG in Kona last year and at the end of her age group. She cleans up in short races and has only recently gone long.
