Andy Jones raced the Worthing Tri again on Sunday having enjoyed the event last year and this time finished 7th in AG, 35th overall!
The mass men's start kicked off at the even earlier start time of 6.30 this time, brought forward due to the very flat shoreline there and feared unfavourable tides, which might have later left us wading into transition. I was up therefore at 3.15 for one of my earliest ever breakfasts before driving down. The swim out was very rough and it was difficult to sight the buoys over the crashing waves - the upside though was that it felt great as we headed back towards the beach. Would best guess it must have been short, judging by my split and everyone else’s, though the organisers put the faster times down to a weaker than normal current on the day. It took a while to settle into the bike which was quite undulating, windy and a bit longer than standard Olympic distance. Tried to be bit conservative here having consistently ridden any running out of my legs all in all my other races this year. A benefit of a very early start meant that it wasn't overbearingly hot for the run, suiting me much better. It was still a slog of two laps up and down the promenade with plenty of opportunity to eyeball the other competitors. Being a BTF National Standard Ranking series race, there was a decent quality of field with Colin Dixon winning for the fourth year in a row. A recommended event, even if the ungodly start time and sea-swim and are a bit of a shock to the system!
